Comparing Hallux Valgus Angle among 13-22 Year-old Students Majoring In Sports Training with Those in General Class

Background and Purpose: We conducted a study to compare hallux valgus angle (HA) among 13-22 year-old students in either athletic preparation or general class in northern Taiwan to determine if different levels of physical training associated with different degrees of hallux valgus. Methods: We recruited 285 subjects (156 athletic preparation students and 129 general class students) whose age were between 13 and 22 years old and these students were classified into junior high school, senior high school, and college subgroups. We excluded subjects who had history of lower extremities neuromuscular or musculoskeletal injuries in the recent 6 months. We measured the hallux angle of both feet with a goniometer. All statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS for Windows 12.0 Statistical significant level was set at α=0 .05. Results: Thirty-six cases (22.6%) of obvious hallux valgus (over 20 degree) were noted in the athletic preparation class and 18 cases (14.0%) were noted in the general class. Statistic difference was noted by the Chi-square test (p<0.05). Participating in the athletic class or not is highly associated with the HA angle. Statistic significance was revealed by ANCOVA (p<0.05). Students in the athletic preparation class had larger HA angle than those in general class. Conclusions: More cases of severe hallux valgus were noted in the athletic preparation class than in the general class. The athletic preparation class students had larger mean hallux valgus degree than the general class students. Owing to the major difference between the athletic preparation class and the general class is physical activity levels, we believe that physical activity may have a great influence on the developing of hallux valgus in school age.
