The Quantitative Precipitation Estimation Research Using the X-band Radar Data during a SoWMEX/TiMREX IOP8 Case

本文是利用在2008年6月14日至17日(西南氣流實驗IOP8期間)中央大學車載X-波段雙偏極化雷達(Taiwan Experimental Atmospheric Mobile-Radar,TEAM-R)的觀測資料回波(Z)、比差異相位差(KDP)估計降雨,與雨滴譜儀(二維雨滴譜儀2-DVD和撞擊式雨滴譜儀JWD)、中央氣象局自動雨量站的實際觀測作比較,來評估X-波段雙偏極化雷達在台灣南部地區估計降雨的適用性。發現在降雨估計方面,利用R(KDP)關係式其精確度來的比傳統R(Z)還要好,利用R(KDP)估計降雨產生誤差的分布情形,隨著觀測距離越遠與地勢高度增加而增加。當雷達資料高度越高,與地面雨量站 或雨滴譜儀站的變異性也就越大。前人研究指出,降雨估計所能接受的誤差範圍約在15到20%以內。根據這個條件,本研究結果顯示當利用TEAM-R 的KDP資料估計降雨時,在20公里以內是不錯的估計範圍;當估計範圍大於20公里時,其誤差會大於20%而不適用。

This study uses the polarimetric data (reflectivity, Z and specific differential phase shift, KDP) of National Central University-s mobile X-band polarimetric radar (TEAM-R) during June 14-17 (IOP-8, SoWMEX/ TiMREX), 2008 to estimate precipitation. These polarmetric precipitation estimates are compared with the measurements of disdrometers (2-DVD and JWD) and Central Weather Bureau-s automatic rain gauges to evaluate the applicability of the X-band polarimetric radar in southern Taiwan to quantitative precipitation estimation.For precipitation estimation, R(KDP) is found to perform better than R(Z), but the errors of R(KDP) increase with the target distance and terrain height. The variability between the radar data and rain gauge (or disdrometer) measurements is larger when the radar observations are higher.Previous studies mentioned that the acceptable range of the errors for precipitation estimation is approximately 15~20%. Following this criterion, the precipitation estimates using TEAM-R-s KDP data are acceptable within a range of 20 km but the errors exceed 20% beyond 20 km.
