The variation in the transversal and axial direction of absorption behaviors of Taiwania, China fir and Japanese cedar was investigated. The experimental results are summarized as follows: (1) Variation in the absorption equilibrium moisture content (EMC) in the transversal directions can be summarized into two types, in which Type 1 showed the constant EMC values from pith outward to the bark, and Type 2 showed decreasing EMC values from pith toward the bark. Almost all of the wood specimens belonged to Type 1. However, Variation in the axial direction can be classified into two types, in which Type I showed higher EMC values in the portion of stump wood and the lower EMC values at 2/4 tree height, Type 2 showed lower EMC values in the portion of stump wood and the greater EMC values at 3/4 tree height. (2) The EMC values of three wood species showed the decreasing tendency as follows: Japanese cedar> Taiwania > China fir, However, It increased linearly with increasing the values of specific gravity in air condition of wood. (3) Variation in the average swelling %in absorption condition in the transversal direction can be classified into four types. However, three types for axial direction variation.
