Finite-Resistivity Instabilities of a Sheet Pinch

An algebraic but general procedure which is the direct application of semi-group representation is used to obtain the criteria for instabilities and a simple evaluation of their growth rates is demonstrated for the finite resistive magnetohydrodynamical case. The results are compared qualitatively with other works and the parameter dependence of the gravitational mode agrees fairly well with the computer experiment.
