Raman spectra of isotopically mixed crystals of C6H6 and C6D6 were observed at 77°K with an Ar+ laser as the exciting source. Various Raman lines behave quite differently upon isotopic substitution in the crystal: the lattice modes shift rather uniformly towards the Rayleigh line with increasing C6D6 concentration; the non-degenerate intramolecular modes do not show any change in their frequencies; and the exciton structures of some doubly degenerate intramolecular modes degrate into broad bands.A model of 'effective unit cell' is introduced to interpet of Raman spectrum of pure benzene crystal. The spectra of isotopically mixed crystals can be used to elucidate the interactions in the crystal system.
