The purpose of this study was to compare the relative comfort levels of different electrical currents used in eliciting isotonic contractions of quadriceps femoris muscle. The quadriceps femoris muscles of 40 healthy subjects were stimulated by the intensity that was strong enough to extend the subject's knee from 30 to O degrees of flexion against one-kilogram weight. Four' different currents, with identical stimulating pulse rate and pulse duration, were used: continuous and intermittent biphasic currents, Russian current and interferential current. The relative comfort level of electrically elicited contraction for each current was determined for each subject using a 10-cm-long visual analog scale. The results showed that a subject's perception of intermittent stimulation, either biphasic current or Russian current, was more comfortable than that of continuous stimulation. No whether middle or low frequency of currents, subjective comfort levels were similar in the condition of the same short pulse duration.
