To investigate the enterohepatic circulation of naringenin, a paired-rat arrangement was employed consisting of a drug treated donor rat whose bile was diverted to the duodenum of an untreated recipient rat via the bile cannula. Plasma concentrations of naringenin were measured by a validated liquid chromatographic method. Naringenin was detected in the plasma of both donor and recipient rats following an intravenous injection of 80 mg/kg naringenin to the donor rat. Naringenin was detected in the plasma of the recipient rat after 20 min. The coefficient ratio of enterohepatic circulation for the recipient and donor rats calculated as the ratio between the area under the concentration curves (AUC) in the recipient and donor rats (k = AUC recipient/AUC donor) was 0.024.
