The semiconductor diode laser is a newly available laser system in ophthalmological field with the advantage of compact size, less cost, air cooling and high electrical to optical efficiency. It emits light at a wave length of 800 nm. We used this laser system to perform contact transscleral cyclophotocoagulation in 7 pigmented rabbits. Significant decrease of IOP was noted in treated eyes over 3 months follow-up. Histopathological findings of acute lesion revealed disraption of ciliary process, necrosis and depigmentation of ciliary epithelium. At late phase, pigment dispersion and fibrosis were found in the ciliarybody. Our study suggest that semiconductor diode laser has great potential to be used as a new tool for cyclophotocoagulation in human eyes.
