The recently announced agenda of compulsory education in Taiwan identifies several tasks of education, such as the linkage between school education and daily life, the training of the information competency, and ability in problem solving. Envisioning the function of maps in fulfilling these tasks, cartographers should pay more attention in this regard. This paper broadly reviews literatures in map educations and summarizes factors that influence the competency of the student's map skills. The five elements of map skills presented by Meyer are adopted as framework of competence indicators for map skills. It is anticipated that such indicators can provide guidelines for the development of ongoing reformation of compulsory education in Taiwan.
