Spring Migration of the Gray-faced Buzzard (Butastur indicus) in Central and Southern Taiwan in 2005

摘要

本研究應用中央氣象局設在台南縣七股的氣象雷達站，參考彰化縣八卦山、南投縣埔中和高雄縣鳳山水庫的地面逐日觀測，以分析2005年3月灰面鵟鷹(Butastur indicus)的北返遷移鷹群結構、數量、路線、飛行高度和速度。從雷達回波圖顯示，鷹群長度平均為6.09km，寬度平均為2.84km。本季估計共有57,089隻灰面鵟鷹過境台灣。經由本島陸地北遷的鷹群有93.7%，其中42.1%的鷹隻沿著嘉南平原北上，51.6%的鷹隻沿屏東縣春日鄉至高雄縣六龜鄉之問的山區北上；其中只有鷹群總數的31.3%通過八卦山賞鷹點10km半徑內。另外，本研究首度發現，少數鷹群會選擇不過境本島，直接由巴士海峽的島嶼穿過澎湖至中國大陸。鷹群在山區線的飛行高度494.3m顯著高於平原線363.6m，飛行速度則無顯著差異。

We used Doppler weather radar at Chiku, Tainan County, southwestern Taiwan to determine the spring migration patterns, including flock structure, number, flyway route, and flight height and speed, of Gray-faced Buzzards (Butastur indicus) in March 2005, and results were referenced to daily ground counts collected from 3 stations (i.e. Baguashan, Changhua County; Pujhong, Nantou County; Fengshan Reservoir, Kaohsiung County). Radar images showed that buzzard flocks averaged 6.09 km in length and 2.84 km in width. In total, an estimated 57,089 buzzards passed through our study site in that month. Most (93.7%) buzzards flew over land, and only 6.3% flew' over the watet Among those buzzards, 42.1% migrated via the Chia-Nan Plain, and 51.6% via mountain routes between Liouguei Township, Kaohsiung County and Chunrih Township, Pingtung County. Only 31.3% of the buzzards passed through the 10-km radius of the ground station at Baguashan. We first discovered that a few buzzards took a non-stop flight, directly from the Bashib Strait via the Pescadores to southern China. Flight altitude via the mountain route (494.3 m) was significantly higher than that via the Chia-Nan Plain (363.6 m); whereas flying speed did not differ between the 2 routes.
