Promoting a Policy of Healthy Lifestyle for Nurses-Strategies to Improve Nursing Health through Behavioral Modifications of Diet and Exercise

Nurses are vital human resources of a hospital and serve in the front line of patient care, but their personal health often takes a back seat. The research revealed that the average nurse's lifestyle is lacking in good behavioral practices, especially in terms of an unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle. As a result, they show poor fitness performance status. If left as is, without correcting these problems, our nurses will develop physical problems and in turn, affect the quality of care that they can provide to their patients. A review of the scientific evidence in the literature identified unhealthy work practices, lack of health promotion education, poor personal health cognition and environment factors as the major factors affecting nurses' health behaviors. The established strategies include individual goal-setting and the promotion of healthy behaviors with a protocol of healthy diet and exercise behaviors, holding education programs, and setting up a supportive environment to promote healthy life style. Finally, we can evaluate the amount of behavioral change and the effect on physical indices, such as BMI, to confirm the benefit of such a health promotion policy for nurses. The results and feedback can guide future modifications to the program in order to accomplish the goal of effective health promotion among the nursing staff.
