Doctrine of informed consent means that the patient’s consent to a dental therapeutic procedure must be based on information about the nature and purpose of the treatment, alternative treatment options, benefits and the risks or adverse effects of the treatment options. Patients have the right of freedom to make personal choices. Unless an emergency exists, a patient’s consent will be invalid if gained by fraud, under duress, or by misrepresentation. Providing informed consent is a safe practice for health care providers and allows patients the dignity of making choices regarding their medical and dental care.
