In order to understand the factors related to adult betel-quid chewing and cessation, a nationwide survey conducted in 1999 was used for secondary data analysis. The subjects include 1865 male adults and 1830 female adults. The rates of current betel-quid chewing were 17.69% for males, 1.04% for females, and 9.45% for all adults. It was found that 5.84% of the males and 0.49% of the females were chewing betel-quid everyday. Respondents with the highest rates of betel-quid chewing were 25-44 years old, had middle school or lower education, were technical and semi-technical workers, and were residents in eastern Taiwan. The factors related to betel-quid chewing were sex, age, education, residential area, and knowledge about the harm resulting from betel-quid chewing. For those who had chewed betel nuts, the factors related to the desire to cease betel-quid chewing were age, knowledge about the harm caused by betel-quid chewing, and smoking. For those who chewed betel-quid and smoked, the factors related to the desire to cease betel-quid chewing were age, having tried to quit smoking the previous year, and having the intention to quit smoking within six months. In conclusion, betel-quid chewing should be controlled, and a regular nationwide survey on betel-quid chewing using standardized measurement criteria would be useful. Interventions focusing on prevention and cessation of betel-quid chewing also need to be implemented.
