The Influence of Type of Community Organization on Service-learning in Medical Students

並列摘要

We investigated the influence of different types of community organization on the results of service-learning in medical students. We assigned the students to provide service in four types of community organization: elderly service (ES), after-school-tutoring (AST), health education (HE), and service to indigenous Taiwanese people (ITP) in their tribal communities. After the students finished their service, their reflections on the course were collected and classified by two professional raters. The ratings were based on ten criteria developing from Chickering's psychosocial developmental theory and the main purpose of the course. The feedback reflections were also classified as negative or positive overall. The results revealed that students' empathy was engaged more easily in the ES, AST, and ITP courses than in the HE courses. Students at the HE group understood that they had to abandon their private affairs and work together with the other students to go on their mission. The results implied that different types of service-learning could help students to build up particular abilities. Further, the great majority of the students (91%) rated their learning experience as positive. Finally, the results suggest that improvements in the design of the service-learning curriculum which recruits different types of community organization will enhance student learning of a variety of skills related to the mission of their organization.
