Retrospective Evaluation of Liver Function in Psychiatric Patients with Hepatitis B Viral Infection

精神病患感染乙型肝炎病人之肝功能回顧性研究

並列摘要

Background: Valproic acids are frequently used in patients with bipolar disorders or other psychiatric disorders. Safety issues have been concerned to prescribe valproic acid in patients with hepatic dysfunction due to its possible adverse effects of hepatotoxicity. Methods: We evaluated the values of SGOT and SGPT in 623 psychiatric inpatients who had hepatitis B infection and valproic acid through the computer database of a psychiatric hospital. Results: Psychiatric patients of hepatitis B carriers treated by valproic acid did not have higher levels of liver function compared to those who were not treated by valproic acid. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that valproic acid use in psychiatric patients with hepatitis B infection is safe in terms of liver function.
