Auditory hallucinations are severely distressing for psychiatric patients. Even when on medication, many psychiatric patients still suffer from auditory hallucinations, and thus need to find ways to live with this problem. This study surveyed self-management strategies for auditory hallucinations in patients with schizophrenia. The survey was performed by using purposive sampling. The data was gathered from medical centers and psychiatric hospitals located in Hualien, Pingtung, Kaohsiung and Tainan cities, and patients were interviewed using both structural and semi-structural questionnaires. A total of 102 patients participated in the study. Among the participants, only 67 patients claimed to have self-management strategies to deal with auditory hallucination. Forty-six separate strategies were identified. The most frequent described strategy for dealing with auditory hallucinations was simply “ignore”. Next, all ranking similarly in terms of popularity, were the three strategies “listen to music”, “watch television”, and “talk with others”. Finally, “exercise” also ranked fairly highly, and was the fifth most popular method of dealing with auditory hallucinations. The findings of this study can be used as a reference for managing auditory hallucinations in schizophrenic patients. Simultaneously, the management strategies described herein can also provide reference for clinical staff and family in caring for schizophrenic patients suffering auditory hallucinations and helping them achieve relief.
