This was a prospective study, based on the Taiwan quality indicator project (TQIP). Data were collected by 125 patients who had been placed continually on ventilator over 48 hours and admitted to the neurosurgery intensive care unit (NICU) and surgical intensive care unit (SICU) at a medical center from March to November, 2007. Data were analyzed using the SPSS for Windows 13.0 statistic software package including description statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson correlation analysis. Results of this study were briefly described as follow: (1) Length of time on ventilator and infected before admitted to NICU were related significantly with ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) for the patients admitting to NICU. (2) Length of time admitting to SICU, condensed water revealed in the pipe of ventilator, vomited and feeding way were related significantly with VAP for the patients admitting to SICU. (3) Infected source that isolated from VAP at NICU were: Klebsilla spp., P.aeruginosa, Methecillin Sensitive S.aereus; while at SICU were Acinetobacter baumanii, P.aeruginosa, Candida albican.
