In 1908, the north-south railway in Taiwan was fully opened to traffic. In 1912, Taiwan Governor established the Taiwan Railway Society, which started to publish the magazine Taiwan Railway in the same year. The magazine was renamed "Ishizue" in 1944 and continued being released until 1945. This thesis mainly studies Fukuda Masao's popular literature works published in the Taiwan Railway from the 1930s to the 1940s. The previous researchers indicated that Fukuda's popular literary works had been created "to satisfy readers' interest in entertainment" and "to relieve readers' pressure". I believe that his creation content meant more than that. In other words, through his works, we can get a glimpse of certain "desires" held by the authors and readers from the 1930s to 1940s who lived in Taiwan during the Japanese-ruled period. This paper, in view of Fukuda's creative text in the "Taiwan Railway" with its historical background, intends to investigate the varied viewpoints of the writers and readers toward colonial Taiwan at that time, and to analyze such issues as the various "desires" held by them.
