The Study of the Physical Self-Concept of Primary School Students in Dancing and Swimming Classes

This purpose of this study was to understand the differences of physical self-concept between students in swimming classes and girl students in dancing classes. Students' physical self-concepts are analyzed psychologically while specializing in different sports. It will help to examine and discuss the relationship between students' physical self-concept and sports itself and hope to help children build sounder physical self-concept. In Taiwan, there are about 53 primary schools that have sport classes, and they are specialized in swimming, gymnastics, table tennis, basketball, judo, badminton and tennis. The objective of this research is to find out the differences of physical self-concept between boys and girls in swimming class and girls in dancing class. This research sampled 61 girls from 4th, 5th, and 6th grades in dancing class and 41 boys and 36 girls of those grades in swimming class. Surveys were conducted in 2003, using ”physical self-concept scales”. (Zhuang-Peng Hui, 1996) The data was analyzed by descriptive statistics and T-test of independence. The results are as follows: First, in swimming class, the differences between the boy and girl students were obvious in the physical self-concept of softness and physical strength, but not in the physical self-concept of body, perseverance, elasticity, appearance and fatness. It shows that the issue of sexes affects the sport, swimming. There are differences in some psychological concepts, but the ”whole” physical self-concept scored similarly, which needs to be discussed further. Secondly, the differences between the girls in dancing and swimming classes were clearly shown in the physical self-concept of softness, perseverance, elasticity, appearance and fatness, but not in body and physical strength. It shows that the sports, dancing and swimming differ in some psychological concepts. But, the skills that required from the specialized sports have similar results. Also, there are no obvious differences in ”whole” physical self-concept, which is worth to be discussed further.
