This essay argues that social workers, while helping people with diverse social problems, can also act as agents of non-violent social movements, pursuing fundamental structural changes, aimed at overcoming social injustice and oppression. Many social workers think that a social change or ”radical” orientation can be integrated into their practice. Doing so could eventually resolve the contradictions between conventional tendencies of the social services and the ethical imperative of the profession, to pursue social justice.
