Comparisons of Morphological Properties of Setaria Bernardi and Setaria cervi

Up to date, four different species of genus Setaria (Setaria digitata, S. marshalli, S. cervi and S. bernardi) have been reported from cattle, goat, Formosan Sika deer and Formosan wild boar in Taiwan. Tips of peribuccal crown of head end and the morphology of tail end are the key points to identify these parasites. Despite that the tips of peribuccal crown of head end was similar between S. cervi and S. bernardi, their morphological significance has not been well defined. Techniques of light and electronic microscopes (L. M. and E. M.) were applied to distinguish the morphological differences of these two Setaria species. Results showed the parasites collected from Formosan wild boar and Formosan sika deer peritoneal cavity were confirmed to be S. bernardi and S. cervi by L. M. These two parasites both have blunt-round head and four tips of peribuccal crown; and the tail end of S. bernardi mostly covered with many short spines, meanwhile the S. cervi was spherical knob. Thus, the characters of both head and tail are requisites for identifying S. bernardi and S. cervi in adult female worm; however, the tail differences play a key role to identify the differences. Under E. M. observation, the four tips of peribuccal crown of S. cervi placed at four corners in equal distance (Iike a square); and the ones of S. bernardi were also at four corners but in different distance (like an oblong), that's the major difference. Our research provided a method to identify these two species of parasites by E. M. while only the head end was obtained; besides, S. bernardi was found in the peritoneal cavity of Formosan wild boar was the first case in Taiwan.
