The Study on the Will for Canine Heartworm Disease Medical Treatment of Three Hundred Dog Owners in Northern Taiwan

摘要

One hundred each owners whose dogs were treated at National Taiwan University Animal Hospital (NTU subgroup) and animal hospitals of Taoyuan county (Taoyuan subgroup) as well as 100 students of National Taiwan University who raised dogs (Student subgroup) were investigated on their will for prevention and medical treatment of canine heartworm disease (CHWD) for their dogs by using close type questionnaires, Data were collected and analyzed by Microsoft® EXCEL and SPSS®, The concern on the priority of ordinary medical choices , the percentage of cost, the existent circumstance, the will and the factors with the will for medical treatment of CHWD in these three groups were compared to figure out their differences. The results of this study revealed that the percentage of cost for ordinary medical choices in Taoyuan and student subgroups was two times higher than NTU subgroup. The percentage of owners who had heard about CHWD in NTU, Taoyuan and student subgroups was 93%, 79% and 65%, respectively. The percentage of owners who had never tested, treated with positive result and never prevented CHWD for their dogs in Taoyuan subgroup was similar to student subgroup. Moreover, the percentage of owners who had prevented (42%) and tested (58%) CHWD for their dogs in NTU subgroup was higher than the other subgroups. The will for medical treatment and payment of sub-clinical and mild CHWD in Taoyuan subgroup was lower than the other subgroups (P < 0.05). The factors influencing the will for CHWD medical treatment among three subgroups were personal annual income, owners who had heard about, prevented or tested CHWD for their dogs, average hours to interact with the dog daily and routine health examination. It might be helpful to control CHWD in Taiwan by educating dog owners to know, treat and prevent CHWD based on these different factors.
