Traditional Chinese herbal medicine has been a spotlight of research interests in recent years. In this study, we evaluate the antioxidative and detoxificative activity of modified Chi-Hu-Shu-Gan (M-CHSG) powder in Sprague-Dawley rats with chronic liver injury which were induced by 5D % carbon tetrachloride (2 mL/kg). The results showed that the treatment with high dose MCHSG significantly decreased the serum levels of AST and ALT, and markedly increased the activity of CAT, GST and CYP 2Et in liver which were compared with the CCl4 group (P < 0.05). We suggested that the M-CHSG had the detoxificative and hepatoprotective effects by modulating the detoxification system (CYP450, GST) and enhancing the activities of some antioxidant enzymes (CAT) which alleviated the liver damage caused by CCI4 also shown by lower liver function index (AST, ALT).
