In order to investigate the pathogenicity of ten infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) strains isolated in Taiwan, they were inoculated into one-day-old specific-pathogen-free chicks. The pathogenicity of 10 IBV strains were evaluated according to the mortality and the tracheal and renal lesions. The challenge test was conducted in day-old broilers with maternal antibody to evaluate the protection efficacy of maternal antibody against field IBV challenge. According to the pathogenicity test in SPF chicks, 10 IBV strains were grouped into 2 high, 4 intermediate, and 4 low pathogenicity. The renal lesion was strongly correlated to mortality after IBV challenge (P<0.01). The protection of maternal antibody reduced the mortality, renal lesions and the clinical sings (P<0.05).
