Evaluation of Eco-environmental Vulnerability in Coastal Region of Aogu in Western Taiwan

Climate change is a current global issue of great concern. One of its negative outcomes is increased frequency and intensity of natural disasters, thereby greatly affecting livelihood of the general public. To reduce the impacts of these hazards, subjects related to environmental vulnerability have been discussed extensively in recent years. This research was trying to integrate techniques of remote sensing, geographical information system and factor analysis to study and evaluate eco-environmental vulnerability in coastal region of Aogu in Western Taiwan. The evaluation scheme used five parameters, i.e., building, farmland, road, boundary line and vegetation, and four adaptive indices, i.e., plantation area, vegetation cover, vegetation resilience and stabilized vegetation, for processing. Results from spatial analysis came out with five levels to classify impact rankings of environmental vulnerability, namely, slight, light, moderate, heavy and extreme. According to spatial distributions of vulnerability, most areas classified as extreme and heavy levels located in artificial disturbance zones. Because of better tolerance to stressful conditions, areas largely covered by vegetation were mostly classified as slight level. In summary, the results of this study are very close to reality. Therefore, the developed protocol may also be extended to use in other high-risk coastal regions with diversified ecosystems that are vulnerable to natural disasters.
