This study aims to investigate Chanting Assistance and its effects on the family members of the deceased through testimonies. Questionnaires were mailed to families who lost their family members at our hospice palliative care units between 2003 and 2005. We obtained 156 responses from the families (response rates: 30.1%). 81.4% responders had experiences in Chanting Assistance. 77.9% responders felt the chanting assistance were ”helpful” or ”very helpful” in relieving the grief. 41.7% said that the body and extremities of the deceased appeared ”soft” or ”very soft” after the ceremony. 37.0% said that the face of the deceased had ”good change” or ”very good change” after the ceremony. The aforementioned percentages could reach upon 49.4% and 43.1% in those with chanting assistance time longer than 8 hours. The families in group of having ”good change” or ”very good change” in face of the deceased had more positive attitude toward recommendation for chanting assistance than the others (the percentage of highly recommendation of chanting assistance:93.6% vs. 65.3%; P<0.001). We need further study design for both the exploration of the corpses change and the psychospiritual affection in the process of chanting assistance.
