一代經濟學宗師的終身職志：自由－林鐘雄的經濟理想及對臺灣的大愛

林鐘雄於臺大經濟研究所畢業之後，即投入社會，開啟他一生看似平凡實卻不平凡的讀書人報國生涯。他的生命和許多前輩經濟學家一樣，運用經濟學的知識協助解決當代的經濟問題與社會困境。半個世紀來，臺灣經濟體制從管制逐次走向自由，政治日趨民主進步，與諸多自由主義者堅守市場機制有極密切關連。林鐘雄是這段期間的參與關係者，在自由經濟思潮的推展、經濟政策之制定與執行，特別是作育英才、培育第二代經濟學家方面，更發揮在政治經濟領域影響力，對臺灣追求自由的進展，引領風騷，居功厥偉。1980年代臺灣經濟邁進自由化新頁，林鐘雄時代來臨。幾十年來，他投入臺灣現代化的自由進程：領導金融研究小組致力金融自由化、推動利率與匯率自由化落實市場價格機能、以學者形象領軍創辦銀行模範生、直至一生最後的工作－健全資本市場體制，他盡力貢獻經濟現代化。林鐘雄秉持知識份子報國理念，支持國人自由民主目標，並參與民主化運動。在戒嚴肅殺下耕耘《大學》、《八十年代》雜誌系列，播種民主自由、關懷政治、扶助受難者家屬；彙聚群英診斷經濟，參與反對派國會公聽會。林鐘雄以其經濟社會地位關係，在經濟層面對臺灣民主化過程的影響，扮演著相當重要的關係角色。林鐘雄一生專注於經濟學領域奮鬥貢獻，如果稱其「大師」，一定不為其本人接受，但就其風範與影響，堪稱臺灣一代經濟宗師。他研究學問認真投入、教學培育英才、論著豐碩智慧；為了健康臺灣，懷抱理想悲天憫人；他更堅守讀書人的情操，淡泊名利執著理想；這些都足以彰顯他低調中的不平凡。林鐘雄為政治自由與社會進步奮鬥半個世紀，而且成就傲人，他畢生致力追求自由價值，他對臺灣的大愛精神將永久長存。

Right after getting the doctoral degree of economics at National Taiwan University, Zhong-Xiong Lin started his extraordinary life of an intellectual dedicating himself to the country. Like the previous economists, Lin shared his knowledge to help people deal with the economic problem and social obstacles. Over the last half century, Taiwanese economic system has been changed from a controlled market mechanism into a free-market one. Meanwhile, the politics in Taiwan have become more and more democratic, which is closely related to the market mechanism many liberalists have been trying to protect. Lin was deeply involved with these changes, especially with the promotion of liberal economics, economic policy development and implementation, and economic education. Lin's influence in politics and economics facilitated the progress of freedom and liberty in Taiwan.Taiwan's economics started to change into free-market economics since the 1980s, which can be seen as Lin's era. Over the years, he has been striving for the modernization and progress of liberty, such as financial liberalization, promoting the liberalization of interest and exchange rate so that they can reflect the market price mechanism, initiating bank model with his intellectual leader image, and his ultimate task: to build up an integrated capitalistic market mechanism. He has been dedicated himself to the modernization of economics. Being an intellectual, Lin never lost his will to serve the country, to support Taiwanese people pursue liberty and democracy, and to participate in democratic movement. Even during the martial law period, he still promoted democracy and liberty, raised the public awareness of politics, and helped the victims' families from political persecution by editing and publishing the magazines, The Intellectual, and The 80s. Lin also gathered a group of elite to diagnose Taiwanese economics and let them to the parliament public hearings from the opposite party. With his importance and influence in economics and the society, Lin played a key role to the liberalization in Taiwan from the economic aspect.Lin dedicated his life to economics. If people called him ”master” in front of him, he would definitely refuse to accept, but his attitude and influence worth being given the title, the ”economic grand master.” He was a diligent researcher, an inspiring teacher, and a writer of knowledge and wisdom. To make Taiwan a better place, he never forgot his belief and has been a caring person throughout his life. He has been always persistent with traditional intellectual's attitude, being free from fame and wealth and sticking to his dream. All the above show how extraordinary he was though he was so down-to-earth and not showing off. Lin has been fighting for the liberty of politics and social progression for half a century, and the achievement was amazing. The liberty he has been striving for throughout his life and his generous love will last and be remembered forever and ever.
