民間文學口傳性特質之研究－以台灣民間文學為例

摘要

民間文學原本指口傳民俗（Oral Folklore）中那些較有文學性的東西，如歌謠、民間故事等，因此口傳就是民間文學的基本特質。本研究就是探討口傳特質本身對民間文學產生了怎樣的影響。民間文學因為口傳而會有各種變異，形成各種異文，是學界的通識，而且筆者已另有專文討論，因此不再討論。本文首先從口傳沒有文字定本，會有記憶負擔這一關鍵問題入手，指出歌謠的節奏、韻律本身不只有美感，更有助記的效果，因此古來不論有無文字，人們總愛歌謠、詩歌。這也就是歌謠何以是民間文學重要文類的一個原因。但是本研究的重點還是民間「敘事」。敘事就是說故事，說故事可以散說，如一般的民間故事；更可以歌謠體吟唱，如史詩、敘事歌的說唱。由於敘事篇幅總有一定長度，口頭流傳更有記憶的負擔，因此為了有助記憶，同時也為了達到說／聽互動的美感效果，故事的講、唱，便形成一些特殊的體製或風格。例如故事講、唱常會有重複、三複，更常會藉助程式、套語，以及會強調、極端化，這些在以文字書寫的文學來說可能是缺失，是缺乏創造力的表現，卻是口傳的「文學」的特色。而口傳文化在文字已發達的社會中，相對的是屬於弱勢的下層，因此口傳故事很自然的反映了弱勢階層的想望與文化，這也是民間故事的一個特點。

”Folklore literature” is another name of ”oral folklore”, sometimes it is called ”oral literature”. Originally it comes from the English word ”folklore”. The ”folklore” and ”literature” is different. If the literature's nature is from writing, folklore is from orality. This study is specially on the research of orality of folklore. The most important genres of folklore are folk song/ballad and folk narratives (including myth, legend, folktale).Orality means the action of talking, telling, for audience, is to listen. Listening is very different from reading, it has the problem of memory. Oral literature, from ballad, folk song to folktale, all have the influence of orality/memory problem. The repetition, tripling, and formulaic expression are the nature of folklore. This research has given a good explanation for most problems of the orality of folklore.
