This case report describes nursing experiences using Roy's adaptation model in the care of a patient with severe burns. The authors collected data through observation, interview, and physical assessments. The patient's problems identified included impaired skin integrity, pain, and disturbed body image. In order to assist the patient to adapt to this trauma with a positive attitude, the authors alleviated the patient's sense of uncertainty towards the therapeutic procedures, and promoted her autonomy and safety using listening, caring, and acceptance of her feelings. Through the above nursing care, the patient gradually demonstrated good adaptation regarding physiological functions, self concept, role functions, and interdependence prior to discharge. Now the patient could bravely accept the changes in her life and face her future, and continued with regular follow-up at outpatient. It is expected that this case report can serve as a reference for the nursing care of patients with severe burns.
