Uncertainty of Students with Epilepsy and Its Related Factors in Elementary School Teacher

The purpose of this study is to explore elementary school teachers' uncertainty towards students with epilepsy and its related factors. The study was conducted with a cross-sectional design and the study subjects were elementary school teachers from 64 elementary schools in Kaohsiung. Using stratified random sampling, 400 teachers participated-including 89 males and 311 females, with the average age of 40.4 years old. Four structural questionnaires were used. The results showed that: (a) The subjects' illness uncertainty level towards students with epilepsy was median to high. (b)The subjects' epilepsy knowledge was near passing-grade level. (c) Subjects' age, school size, faculty experience, main teacher experience, and experience of handling epilepsy significantly and positively correlated with the illness uncertainty of students with epilepsy. (d)There was a significant negative correlation between subjects' illness uncertainty level towards students with epilepsy, and epilepsy knowledge, attitude of caring for students with epilepsy as well as behaviors of caring for students with epilepsy. According to the results, school administrators should pay more attention to teachers' anxiety about illness uncertainty towards students with epilepsy and hold workshops that provide epileptic knowledge and how to deal with epileptic paroxysm.
