This research developed a prototype automatic cutting planter for chrysanthemum plug seedling for local cultivation method in Taiwan. The purpose of this machine is to reduce labor needed and to advance planting accuracy while planting chrysanthemum cutting into a 220-cell plug tray. The mechanism design of the machine use compressed air as driving power to activate mini type pneumatic cylinders for clamping flower cuttings and to activate rod and rodless type cylinders for moving the clamps set and doing plantation. Programmable logic controller (PLC) was used as controller for all actions of the machine. The planting cycle is designed adjustable from 11 to 27 seconds but set in 13 seconds for all experiments, and 10 cuttings are clamped and planted in each cycle. The testing results show that the successful planting ratio is about 91.3%, and the planting capacity is about 46 plugs per minute under the situation of providing good and straight flower cuttings.
