A Rudimentary Study on "Bang Ren Bu Cheng" in "The Bamboo Slips of Chu State in Shanghai museum (vol. IX)"

"The bamboo slips of Chu state in Shanghai museum (vol.Ⅸ)", which was published in December 2012 included a text named "Bang Ren Bu Cheng" (邦人不稱) that mainly presented the stories of She Gong ZiGao(葉公子高). Shen (沈) was his family name, Zhu Liang(諸梁) was his given name, and ZiGao was his courtesy name. He was a statesman of Chu state in the end of the Spring and Autumn Period. As a matter of fact, stories about She Gong were well-documented and collected in the traditional texts of Pri-Qin Period, not only in the historical books like "ZuoZhuan"(左傳), "Guo Yu"(國語)and "Zhan GuoCe"(戰國策),but also in the books of Hundred Schools of Thought like "Lun Yu"(論語), "Mozi"(墨子), "Zhuanzi"(莊子), "Xunzi"(荀子), "Hanfeizi"(韓非子)and "LüshiChunqiu"(呂氏春秋).Nevertheless, the images and evaluations regarding She Gong among all of these texts were very different because of a great diversity of interests and values those writers embraced in the particular social cultural historical time and space in their writings. What was the image of She Gong in "Bang Ren Bu Cheng"? This articleaims at discussing the denotations and the annotations of the bamboo slips from a rather structural perspective. It is the hope that the findings of this rudimentary study could help represent the image of She Gong and the positioning in Pre-Qin Period on inquiry into "Bang Ren Bu Cheng".
