During the period of Japanese rule in Taiwan, Japanese monk Gisei Higashiumi's Buddhist efforts in Gaoxiong were wide spread and influential. Nonetheless, Buddhist scholars in Taiwan have seldom mentioned him. There is only one fairly good 「brief introduction」 by Wang Jianchuan. In Japan, even the Supplementary History of Myoshinji Temple: The Myoshinji Temple Since the Meiji Period (Kyoto: Shimon Kaku, 1975), a historical book by the Myoshinji sub-sect of the Rinzai sect to which Gisei Higashiumi belonged, mentions nothing about the important contribution of Gisei Higashiumi. It emphasizes only the achievements of Genshū Umeyama in the early period of the development of the Myoshinji sub-school in Taiwan, and GenboTakabayashi of the later period. Therefore this paper is an effort to do a muchneeded investigation and evaluation of Gisei Higashiumi.
