Shoku, the most senior disciple of Honen, was naturally forced to take on the responsibility of resolving the disputes resulting from his teacher's position of 「abandoning all practices and reciting the Buddha's name only.」 This paper, being a preliminary investigation on Shoku, focuses on information about his life and his writings. Through this, I hope to provide a preliminary understanding of Shoku』s Pure Land thought. Regarding his life, relevant documents will be introduced, and regarding his works, their contents will be outlined briefly. Because Shoku inherited his teacher's theory of 「preferring to follow Shandao's doctrine,」 all of his writings have connections with Shandao's Commentary on the Contemplation Sutra.
