Social Album: Utilizing Social Network to Visualize Co-event Albums

In this thesis, I design a novel method by utilizing an existed social network to merge the photos in the co-event albums, which are created by different users who attended the same event. The prototype system, Social Album, is implemented on Facebook to realize the concept. By visualizing the co-event relationship through the co-event albums in the indexing view, the social relationship among friends can be easily understood and traced. Before designing the Social Album, I first conducted a field study and interviews to extract the design guidelines by observing users’ using behaviors of the web albums services. The novel visualization method is then proposed by adopting the railway metaphor to utilize the lines to represent individuals and nodes to represent the albums (activities) in the indexing view. A technique of merging related co-event albums in one merged album is also developed by not only considering albums’ information about time, location, and participants, but also the information of the photos’ order and color in the browsing view. Finally, a user study is conducted in a small group of users to retrieve the users’ feedbacks for further iterative design.
