In order to make the IEEE 802.16 technology more applicable and competitive to the future wireless networking scenarios, deploying relay stations (RSs) as defined in IEEE 802.16j has been considered a promising and economic solution for coverage extension and throughput enhancement. With rapid growth of mobile subscribers, supporting multimedia broadcast and multicast service has become a challenging issue due to the variety of devices and the diversity of user preference. Although the scalable-coding can be adopted, inappropriate distribution of the layer-encoded multimedia content will result in extra networks resource consumption. Therefore, we consider the multicast resource allocation problem over 802.16j wireless relay networks and demonstrate the hardness of the problem. Moreover, a bandwidth allocation scheme for layer-encoded multicast data transmission is proposed to maximize the overall system utility. Experimental results indicated that our Utility-Based scheme outperforms the Greedy scheme.
