Lesbians’ experiences of Sexual Harassment

This is an exploration study on sexual harassment experiences in lesbian. This qualitative study was conducted using the method of depth interview. Current research was compiled of 5 interviews on 5 different female homosexuals playing different roles in a relationship (undifferentiated, T-prone undifferentiated, and P.) They talked about their experiences of being sexually harassed. Data-analysis was conducted using thematic analysis. We explained the phenomenon with the offenders’ sexual orientation. Lesbians often feel embarrassed and overwhelmed when they attracted unwanted sexual attention, sexual pursuits, or sexual advances from heterosexual male offenders. However, these lesbians will not experience too much conflict within. These sexual harassments did not last long, and these females sent out warning signals immediately. These females tend to have more cautious and despise toward male in the future. “Physical boundary” is an issue raised when lesbians encounter sexual harassments from heterosexual females. Lesbians felt a need for basic respects for each others’ body, and they tend to become more cautious and on guard in future physical contacts with women. When a lesbian is sexually harassed by another lesbian, this relationship changed from cherishing each other, having an ambiguous relationship, to controlling and emotional threats. This kind of sexual harassment is not only hard to identify, but also lasts for a long time. Negative emotions brought about by these experiences are dilemmas, irritation, being wronged, and fear. This sexual harassment is the hardest to deal with. Moreover, no matter which sexual orientation the offender plays, lesbians often chose to remain silent, and not to expose the harassment for fear that their sexual orientation will be exposed. This research would suggest that characteristics of the homosexual should be taken into consideration while defining sexual harassment. Clear regulation and prohibition on multi-sexual discrimination and harassments should be recognized. More efforts should be put into providing a secure and tolerating environment. Under these circumstances, lesbians will feel secure and seek for help when they experience unfairness and sexual harassments.
