Efficiency and Productivity of African Banks around the 2008 Global Financial Crisis: Cases of Burkina Faso and Nigeria

指導教授 : 趙莊敏

摘要

This study assesses the efficiency and productivity of Burkina Faso and Nigerian banks using DEA, Window Analysis, and the Malmquist Productivity Index approach around the 2008 global financial crisis. The data used in this research is composed of information from 33 banks for eight-year period from 2004-2011. There are two inputs and two outputs: inputs are Interest Expenses (IE) and Non-Interest Expenses (NIE) and outputs are Interest Income (IC) and Non-Interest Income (NIC). Our results are as follows: Based on DEA analysis, the Burkina Faso and Nigerian banking industries have been affected by the external environment, that is the subprime crisis generated in the United States. Before and during the global financial crisis, the efficiency of Burkina Faso and Nigerian banks decreased slightly. However, one year after the crisis, the efficiencies of these banks start increasing except for Nigeria when the country experienced its local banking crisis in 2010. During the crisis, Burkina Faso and Nigerian banks, made some efforts to restructure their profit-generating activities. Over the period of this study, foreign-owned banks in both countries performed better than local banks. During the crisis, using both DEA-CCR and DEA-BCC models, banks in Nigeria had a higher average score than those in Burkina Faso. After the crisis, Nigerian banks had a higher average score than those in Burkina Faso based on the same two models as well.
