應用數字鍵盤與延伸子目錄於拇指觸控文字輸入

Employing Numeric Keypad and Extended-Submenu on Thumb Touch Text Entry Method

摘要


智慧型手機的觸控文字輸入介面,並未針對單手操作的情境與需求,做最佳的設計。本研究意圖以數字鍵盤(Numeric Keypad)取代Qwerty鍵盤,取其按鍵少且按鍵尺度大的優點,改善拇指操控鍵盤的使用性。 在智慧型手機普及之前,使用數字鍵盤以多重按壓(Multi-Taps)方式,進行字母輸入,已被廣為學習與認知。基於此項普及的使用者經驗,本研究進行改良,應用Pop-Up Menu的概念,設計延伸字母選單取代多重按壓的字母輸入。為了比較兩者之使用效率與學習性測試。乃設計測試用之介面,安裝於智慧型手機。實驗透過操作三種不同的文字輸入任務,紀錄兩種介面的完成任務時間,並請受測者填寫SUS系統使用性量表,針對兩種介面進行評價。研究結論如下: (1) 具備延伸字母選單的觸控數字鍵盤,在單手操作的情境下,其操作績效略遜於習用之多重按壓方式。唯,受測者評價單手操作時之手機握持穩定性,則偏向延伸字母選單的輸入方式。 (2) 以多重按壓觸控數字鍵盤來進行文字輸入,是使用實體數字鍵盤的經驗移轉。由於智慧型手機的尺度較大,單手操作時之手機握持穩定性不佳。此外,在觸控數字鍵盤執行多重按壓任務,不利於未能掌握肌肉控制及協調的使用者,尤其是高齡者及幼童。 (3) 對受測者而言,以觸控數字鍵盤加上延伸字母選單進行文字輸入,是全新的體驗。實驗中,其完成任務時間隨著操作次數顯著地縮短,顯示此新式輸入法具有良好的學習性。此項特性在SUS系統使用性量表與測後的訪談中亦獲得驗證。

Current touch keypad designs of text entry method on smartphone does not deliberately support thumb operation in one-handed grip scenario. This study intended to employ Numeric Keypad to replace virtual Qwerty keypad on smartphone text entry in one-handed grip scenario. The reason of this replacement was based on the advantages of less quantity of button and larger button dimensions of Numeric keypad. Before smartphone was all the rage, text entry by Multi-Taps on Numeric keypad was learned and used popularly. Based on this user experience, a new designed Numeric keypad was followed in this study in which all letters were placed on Pop-Up Extended -Submenu of each numeric button. It was designed to replace Multi-Taps letter selection. The comparison on efficiency and learnability between original and this new designed numeric keypad goes with 3 types of experiment of text entry task. The completion time was recorded, the subjects was interviewed and answered the questionnaire of SUS (System Usability Scale) after experiments done. The findings of this study are: (1) Pop-Up Extended -Submenu of numeric keypad increased one-handed operation stability, but input speed was slower than Multi-Taps entry. (2) Multi-Taps brings operation difficulty to those who lacked of coordination skills, especially aged people and children. (3) This new Numeric keypad with extended-submenu was an entire new user interface to those who joined the experiment. Subject reduced completion time reveals that it performs well on the learnability which was also confirmed by the SUS score.
