The Impact of Equipment Seismic Isolation on Collection Space for Museums

This study aimed to investigate the aseismatic requirement and equipment seismic isolation in collection spaces. Based on the quantitative research method, a questionnaire survey was conducted to collect research data. First of all, the basic framework of the questionnaire was established through literature review, and five experts were invited to review and modify the structure and content of the questionnaire. Later, a pre-test of the questionnaire was carried out to enhance the reliability and validity of the questionnaire and derive the formal questionnaire. Lastly, a total of 81 collection staffs from 19 domestic museums were selected as research subjects. 68 copies of the questionnaires were retrieved, and 66 were valid. The collected data were further processed with descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, dependent sample t-test, and one-way ANOVA to analyze the issues related to aseismatic requirement and equipment seismic isolation. According to the research results, conclusions and suggestions were proposed as follows: (1) In the aspect of aseismatic requirement, the majority of the subjects agreed with the adoption of traditional aseismatic measures in collection spaces, suggesting that based on traditional aseismatic measures, equipment seismic isolation should be integrated into the design of collection spaces. Besides, the female collection staffs’ concept of planning aseismatic measures should also be reinforced. (2) In the aspect of equipment seismic isolation, the safety factor was the priority focus, followed by the spatial factor. Among the five factors, the technical factor was considered least important. Equipment seismic isolation should mainly provide the function of seismic disaster reduction and feature more flexible spatial planning than traditional aseismatic measures. However, the research subjects’ knowledge about equipment seismic isolation was still insufficient and could be further enhanced. (3) It was suggested that equipment seismic isolation issues be more emphasized in the future. The economic factor, safety factor, and spatial factor were expected to be more important in the future than in the present, indicating that collection staffs agreeing with equipment seismic isolation need to enhance their concepts about aseismatic measures, economic factors, promulgation of safety, and spatial planning. Besides, museum staffs in eastern Taiwan or offshore islands also need to acquire more knowledge about equipment seismic isolation.
