This study attempts to examine various aspects related to veteran leisure activity in order to understand how veterans choose different activities due to constraints resulted from both internal and external factors as well as to compare what kind of differences and attitudes both public and private veterans institutions or veterans both in and out of a veterans home would share in terms of leisure activity participation. The main purpose of the study is to understand veterans’ need and expectation for leisure activity and to construct leisure activity models that are applicable to the veteran life course. This study depends on In-depth Interview Method of qualitative research, limits its scope to Taoyuan County, and takes both veterans living on public funds and those at personal expenses who face different charge standard as well as both veterans within and those without a veterans home who face different living environments as the research subject. Those who were interviewed include 4 public-funded veterans, 4 private-funded veterans, 3 veterans who do not stay in a veteran home, 3 veteran home operators and 2 professionals; in total, 16 sample cases were completed. According to this study, veterans who rely on public funds would choose low-cost leisure activity and on the whole favor recreational activity, while veterans who live at personal expenses with less financial restriction tend to choose multi-rich activities and on the whole favor literary activity because of a better educational background. Veterans who live without a veterans home enjoy a freer activity environment and a higher leisure autonomy; nevertheless, the sphere of their leisure venues is often based in the neighborhood. In terms of leisure type, this study concludes that veterans regard leisure as a ‘philosophy of completion’; furthermore, the following three subtypes can be extracted from a comparison between veterans both within and without a veterans home: content subtype, ease subtype and resignation subtype. Lastly, this study also proposes the following recommendations: veterans should participate in more leisure activities; veterans institutions should help to strengthen the motivation of veterans towards leisure; communities and concerned authorities should emphasize on veterans’ need for leisure and introduce resources. In addition, the general public should interact more with veterans in order to experience their enthusiasm and learn about the wonderful stories throughout their life course.
