Abstract Backgroun: As a health care provider dental and oral hygiene students should be a good model to their family members, friends and especially patients for oral health behavior. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the difference of oral health promotion behaviors among oral hygiene, dentistry and non dental-related college students. Methods: A cross-sectional study design using the Hiroshima University - Dental Behavioral Inventory (HU-DBI) questionnaire to collect data from oral hygiene, dentistry and non-dental college students in a southern medical university in Taiwan. Overall, 841students completed survey with anonymously. Response rate was 83%. ANOVA and multivariate regression analysis was used to examine the association between HU-DBI score and three departments. Results: The present study indicated that HU-DBI mean score in oral hygiene, dentistry and non-dental students was 7.52, 6.69 and 5.77, respectively (P<0.001). Department variables were explained 8.1% of the variability for HU-DBI score. After controlling potential variables, multivariate regression model showed that oral hygiene students have significant higher HU-DBI mean score than dentistry and other non-dental students (B=0.58 and 1.10, respectively). Compared to oral hygiene students, dentistry and non-dental students were less to think they can clear their teeth well without using toothpaste (Odds ratio (OR)=0.39 and 0.23, respectively), to use a child-sized toothbrush (OR=0.46 and 0.38, respectively) and not to use a toothbrush with hard bristles (OR=2.18 and 2.07, respectively). Conclusion: Compared to dentistry and non-dental students, oral hygiene students were found to have better oral health behavior. Our findings suggest that the further syudy is necessary to collect more data form other of department of oral hygiene in north and center Taiwan.
