With the advancement of living environment, medical technology and the aging society change rapidly in Taiwan, the public is paying more and more attention to the health and care of the elderly population. However, the growing of dual-income households and the decrease in fertility rate means many families now use eldercare facilities to resolve their inability to take care of the elderlies in the family. According to the (2015) statistics published by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the elderly population in Taiwan has reached 11.29% of the total population as of May 2015. Taiwan now has 1,038 elderly care centers, 447 nursing homes, and 16 veterans home. During the six months in the first half of 2015, five private elderly care centers were established in New Taipei City alone. It is evident that the demand of caring center for elderly is growing rapidly. According to domestic and foreign research, the care of elderlies should no longer just focus on service alone. Rather, “learning” should be used as an important indicator in order to improve the quality of life for the elderly population. More than others, elderlies with physical disabilities should focus even more on developing their desire to exercise and establish good habits of physical activity. This study especially chooses elderlies on wheelchairs as the main subject and designs dance classes for them, based on their ability of body movements and creative development. This action research method is used to study elderlies living at Tien Chia Chi Care Center in Guandu region for 28 dance lessons over a four months period. This study used video recordings and interviews to review the affects that these dance lessons have on elderlies in wheelchairs. The research results include: 1. Dance activities can improve the body movement abilities of elderlies in wheelchairs 2. Dance activities can increase the self-confidence, sense of achievement, and happiness for elderlies in wheelchairs 3. Dance activities combined with reminiscent elements can help elderlies to recall memories of their past 4. Dance activities combined with games can stimulate the elderlies’ creativity 5. Dance activities combined with games can encourage interaction and communications between elderlies 6. Dance activities can help elders to adapt to the care center environment
