台灣室內設計的開路先鋒─顏雲連 研究

摘要 室內設計作品不同於建築的是,它的生命期較短,若沒有及時記錄,就會隨時光之流逝而不復存在,台灣室內設計史的發展一直就存在著這個問題。在高汰舊率、室內設計工作前輩逐漸隱退、凋零的情況下,史料的蒐集應是刻不容緩的工作。目前有關台灣室內設計史的研究相當有限,且尚無以台灣早期室內設計界之前輩設計師作為研究的主題,因此,本研究希望能透過室內設計界的前輩顏雲連老先生及其作品,為台灣室內設計史做一見證,紀錄台灣室內設計史的開端。本研究之主要目的為:(一)了解多元文化的環境之下,顔雲連先生的成長、教育以及生活歷程,對其日後創作風格的影響。(二)探討顔雲連之作品風格及其對台灣室內設計發展的影響。 本研究以人物為研究專題,因此採質性研究法進行,以開放、深度的訪談方式,建立第一手資料,共分為五大章。第一章緒論,說明研究的背景與動機,陳述本研究之目的、範圍及對象。第二章文獻回顧,探討相關台灣室內設計發展歷程之文獻。第三章前衛的老畫家,探討顏雲連先生之成長、教育及生活歷程。第四章顏雲連的藝術創作,探討顏雲連的純藝術與應用藝術創作,高齡八十二的顏雲連,在四○年代即開始抽象藝術、廢物藝術、綜合媒材的創作,他是以畫家的本體藝術觀念應用於室內空間設計之上,其設計風格深受西洋現代美術思潮的影響,是台灣室內設計史中由純藝術跨行做室內設計工作最典型的例子。顏雲連一生歷經政治丕變、社會變遷、文化區隔、經濟興衰等多重變革,饒富戲劇性,又增添幾分傷感,因其為戰後最早從事室內設計的藝術家,因而成為室內設計業界的開路先鋒,台北市現存最古老的「波麗路」西餐廳,就是顏雲連最著名的代表作,無論是設計風格或是歷史意義,皆具有其一定的地位。 第五章結論,由於相關台灣室內設計史的史料相當缺乏,增加本研究之困難度,因此建議建立台灣室內設計史應是刻不容緩的工作。本研究發現,台灣室內設計初期,許多設計語彙是來自顏雲連的原創,仿效者再加以發揮之後,造成一股繁複性風格的流行風潮。顏雲連在多元文化的環境之下成長、接受教育及生活經驗等,成就其藝術創作多元與多變的風貌;其美學教育是以繪畫為主,因此他的室內設計作品屬美術性質較强、建築與空間性質較弱的特質。

Abstract The main difference that separates interior design from architecture is that the works of interior design won’t last long if it is not documented properly. The unlisted works will no longer exist as time go by. This is exactly the problem we have faced today when one tries to describe the history of interior design in Taiwan. This situation will be worsening when senior designers retire or fade away at fast turn-over rate; thus, preservation of the history of interior design has become increasingly important. Currently, with limited information available on the history of interior design in Taiwan and on individual who developed interior design in the early days of Taiwan, I wish to study the works of Mr. Yun-Lian Yen, who is a pioneer of the interior design in Taiwan. In addition, I hope to witness the history and development of the interior design in Taiwan through this study. The main purposes of this study are as the following: 1) to understand Mr. Yen’s development and view that are influenced by his education and growth experience under multi-cultured backgrounds; 2) to analyze Mr. Yen’s works and style that have affected the development of the interior design in Taiwan. This study centers on Mr. Yen and his works. Thus, I have approached it with qualitative method to gather the first-hand information by interviewing with Mr. Yen himself and examining the relevant literature. This study consists of five chapters. The first chapter is introduction describing the general background and specific aims. The second chapter includes literature review relating to the history and development of interior design in Taiwan. The third chapter outlines Mr. Yen’s biography emphasizing his education, growth experience and career development. The fourth chapter examines the works created by Mr. Yen and it includes his creation of pure and applied arts. Mr. Yen started his career from abstract art, junk art and mixed media during the 40s. He has applied artistic view as a painter to interior design that is heavily influenced by western modern art. He is one of the models who become an interior designer from abstract artist in the history of interior design in Taiwan. In his entire life, he has experienced many dramatic and often unhappy changes including social, political, cultural, and economical reforms. He is one of the few who starts his career as an interior designer after The World War II, thus, he has become a pioneer in interior design in Taiwan. The famous restaurant “bolero”, the oldest western restaurant existed in Taipei city and designed by Mr. Yen, has become a landmark in Taipei city in terms of its interior design, style and historic status. The fifth chapter is conclusion and it contains the summary and the suggestions for future study. Since the literatures related to the history of interior design in Taiwan are very rare, this study has become a difficult task. Therefore, the need to quickly establish the base for studying interior design is very important. In summary, this study reveals that many design terms are originally from Mr. Yen’s early works. Furthermore, many interior designers followed his footstep and developed sophisticated styles that became the fashion in the early days of interior design in Taiwan. Mr. Yen’s career, inspired by versatile cultural and educational backgrounds, has made his works versatile and unlimited in creativity. Nevertheless, as his art training focuses in painting, his works in interior design have emphasized more in art than in architecture and space.
