Visiting various universities with diverse architectural styles, some campuses are rather modern in their space planning, some with historic background; their buildings with historic back are employed ubiquitous in their space planning as their campus symbols. In recent years, through of designing the public art projects or remodeling into a realization in the friendly environment, Chung Yuan Christian University enhanced the cohesive forces in the midst of the teachers and students from different departments and study in the livable institutional spaces. This research is conducted by case study research, interviewing the teachers and students at College of Business, and questionnaires survey as the reference to the initial design patterns. Associated with the public presentation to the teachers and students at the College of Business, the principal of the design patterns shall be finalized based on the straw poll, and this space will be sculpted and transformed into a friendly learning environment with the spirit of place accordingly. As conclusion, this design research is based on the concept which considers the College of Business as a city-in-city courtyard business center with special atmosphere of student consumption activity, learning activity and recreation activity. It has been worked out 13 friendly spatial patterns in total, for example:1. Double staircase, 2. Exhibition podium at plaza, 3. Multi-functional courtyard, 4. LED information screen, 5. Entrance orientation board and benches at the columns, 6. Fountain under the camphor trees, 7. Retails and low energy coffee shop etc. Finally, this research is followed by a ‘’pattern Language’’ design method, which aims to redesign several inactive spaces at the College of Business from the perspective of the friendly environment and the spirit of place. In addition to the academic research by description of spatial quality of the planned pattern, these existing spaces are employed as a demonstration of virtual design images.
