探索國民中小學根與芽教師參與根與芽計畫之狀況

Exploring the Status of Junior High School and Elementary School Teachers’ Participation in the Roots & Shoots Program

摘要


國際知名保育學者珍古德博士於1977年創立國際珍古德協會,1991年起在世界各地演講中開始推廣根與芽計畫。協會於1998年在台灣成立分會(全名為國際珍古德教育及保育協會中華民國總會),全力協助推展根與芽這個國際性環境教育計畫,鼓勵台灣的年輕人成立根與芽小組,以實際的行動關懷環境、社區或是動物。學校教師通常在根與芽小組中扮演重要且關鍵的角色,也著實成為協會推展根與芽計畫之主要對象。本研究主要目的即為探索參與根與芽計畫之國民中小學教師,其參與根與芽計畫的狀況、面臨的困難與障礙,以及對協會提供協助之需求與建議。研究方法以量化問卷為主,輔以質化訪談。共發出122份問卷,回收有效問卷98份,並商請協會推薦6位資深根與芽教師接受半結構性訪談。 研究結果發現,大多數根與芽教師認同根與芽計畫的理念與目標,並且認為根與芽計畫可融入九年一貫課程。根與芽小組主要是以班級的型態組成,進行關懷環境主題的頻度最高,且大多以校園作為活動場域,但與國內、國外其他根與芽小組交流情形並不踴躍。整體來說,大多數教師認為經歷根與芽課程與行動後的小組成員,分別在環境教育目標以及根與芽計畫目標上的達成,均有不錯的程度表現。根與芽教師參與根與芽計畫面臨的困難或障礙主要是工作忙碌以致無法全心投入、缺乏合作伙伴、有課程進度壓力、相關背景知識不足等。再者,根與芽教師參與根與芽計畫時對於協會提供之協助,在環境資訊、環境教育等相關的專業協助與資源提供方面均有較高的需求。此外,也建議協會提供多元管道以有效傳達訊息、達成良好互動。最後,本研究依上述結論,針對根與芽教師、國際珍古德協會,以及後續研究提出綜合性建議。

Jane Goodall, one of the world’s leading primatologists and conservationists, founded Jane Goodall Institute in 1977. From 1991, she started to spread the ideas of “Roots & Shoots program” through her speeches all over the world. This Institute established a branch in Taiwan in 1998, Jane Goodall Institute- Republic of China, which assisted to develop Roots & Shoots program. JGI-ROC encourages young people in Taiwan to form the Roots & Shoots groups and care for their environment, communities and different kinds of animals. The school teachers who usually play important roles in the R&S groups are also the main targets that JGI-ROC carries out R&S programs on. This research explored the status, barriers, needs and suggestions of junior high school and elementary school teachers’ participation in the R&S program. Questionnaire was used as a data collection tool. A total of 122 teachers were selected and surveyed; and 98 questionnaires were retrieved. Furthermore, 6 R&S coordinators recommended by the institute adopted semi-structural interviews. According to the results of this research, most R&S coordinators identify the ideas and objects of R&S program and also believe that R&S program can be integrated into the grade 1-9 curriculum. R&S groups mainly consist of classes and most of them emphasize the care and concern of the environment of their schools. However, they seldom communicated with other local or foreign R&S groups. Most R&S teachers thought their group members achieved not only the goal of environmental education but also the goal of R&S program after their members experienced R&S curriculum and activities. Most of the barriers which R&S coordinators encountered are “too busy to invest in”, “lack of partners”, “pressure of heavy instruction”, “lack of background knowledge” and so on. R&S coordinators also need professional assistance on environmental information and environmental education from the institute. Moreover, the providence of different ways for better communication and messages delivery are suggested. This research will make suggestions for R&S coordinators, Jane Goodall Institute, and the following studies.
