This thesis conducts a literary and historical study of early Chinese immigrant women. Although Chinese women of the immigrant generation appear in many Chinese American texts, their importance and agency are often overshadowed by male immigrants and the second-generation Chinese Americans. In this thesis, I bring to the fore the literary renderings of these women by second-generation writers, which dispel the racial stereotype of Chinese women in American mainstream culture. While current scholarship regarding Chinese female history focuses on slave girls and prostitutes, I look at early Chinese immigrant women with different experiences. Analyzing the historical contexts and individual cases, I attempt to show the variety and importance of early Chinese immigrant women. There are five chapters in this thesis. Chapter One serves as an introduction, in which I offer an overview of early Chinese (female) immigration history and discuss the marginalization of early Chinese immigrant women in existing scholarship and by second-generation Chinese American authors. Chapter Two centers on the literary configurations of early Chinese immigrant women in Shawn Wong’s Homebase and Frank Chin’s The Year of the Dragon, both of which deviate from the long-standing negative perception of Chinese women in the dominant American culture. Chapter Three (re)tells Maxine Hong Kingston’s The Woman Warrior from the immigrant mother’s viewpoint and highlights the importance of the mother’s life and immigrant experiences in comprehending her American presence. In Chapter Four, I analyze the familial, cultural, and social differences between early Chinese immigrant women and the women in China and emphasize the contribution of immigrant women to family economy. This chapter also features several historical cases to show the self-fulfillment, political and social engagement of early Chinese female immigrants. I conclude with a summary of this thesis and after thoughts for future research.
