Emperors often grant rewards or titles to Buddhist monks, such as granting purple-robes, titles, and special named courtesy in recognition of their merit or learning. These grants became more common after the Tang Dynasty. With the secularization of Song Buddhism, the number of titles increased even more and the titles include purple robes, special scholastic names, awards for virtue, and ornamental boards on commemorative pagodas. This study uses historical records about Song Dynasty grants combined with other historical documents about monastic history to analyze the titling and endowment of Song Dynasty period monks and to reflect on such phenomena.
