Sport Socialization Process for Special Populations: A Case Study of the 2007 DOWN SYNDROME International Swimming Invitational Tournament

The research on leisure and sport socialization has gained fruitful results from both national and international academic circles. The attitudes people develop towards leisure and sport are considered the result of social learning and social agents. However, the leisure and sport socialization process can probably be different for special populations because many of their social agents are unaware of the leisure and sport opportunities available to them. For this reason, the purpose of the study is to examine the socialization process of children with Down syndrome into swimming contest sport. Based upon the social learning paradigm propelled by Kenyon and McPherson (1973), face-to-face interviews were conducted with coaches, parents and players who participated in 2007 DOWN SYNDROME International Swimming Invitational Tournament. The study found that multiple agents can be influential in the sport socialization process, that parents and peers with Down syndrome are considered important socializing agents and that socializing agents are at the same time socialized groups. Besides, many of the interviewed parents indicated social agents' unfamiliarity with the sports in which children with Down syndrome take part, which shows research on the sport socialization for special populations needs more attention and concern.
