On organic richness in Erhchungchi Formation and Kanhsialiao Formation in Guantian and Hsin-Ying Areas and their Foothills of Southern Taiwan

The study aimed to determine the richness of organic matter in the Erhchungchi and Kanhsialiao Formations located in the Guantian and Hsin-Ying areas and to discuss the relationship between richness of organic matter and biogas generation. We obtained the total organic carbon and pyrolysis data by analyzing cores and cuttings from five wells in the Guantian and Hsin-Ying areas as well as samples collected from outcrops along the Zengwun and Yunshui Rivers. Preliminary study of the data indicated that the average total organic carbon content in the Erhchungchi and Kanhsialiao Formations is less than 0.5%, which implied low hydrocarbon potential. Of the samples collected from Well H5 in the Erhchungchi Formation at a depth between 900 and 905 meters and in Well H-7B at a depth between 910 and 920 meters, few showed their total organic richness reaching the level of fair potential as a source of oil. And the same conclusions for those collected from Well H-7A in the Kanhsialiao Formation at a depth between 1,140 and 1,150 meters. Analysis of cores from the Guantian and Hsin-Ying areas showed that while the level of organic richness in the former - at under 0.2% total organic carbon - is less than that of the latter, there is no significant difference between them in that respect. The level of organic carbon found in the samples collected from rock outcrops on the Zengwun and Yunshui Rivers lied between 0.239% and 0.438%. The total organic carbon content of the samples analyzed, whether they came from rock outcrops or from wells, was generally less than 0.5% although a few of them gave a higher reading. That was consistent with the results of many prior studies: namely, that the sedimentary facies of both the Erhchungchi and Kanhsialiao Formations. In that type of environment, the average organic carbon content was between 0.17% and 0.47%.
